The Practice of Hope-Action Theory: Keys to Intervention Success

Research using Hope-Action Theory (HAT) with marginalized clients provides substantial evidence of the effectiveness of this approach. In this presentation, Dr. Spencer (“Skip”) Niles will introduce Hope-Action Theory and provide specific examples for translating theory to practice with clients and students. An illustrative case study will be used to demonstrate the uniqueness of HAT, including how to use the Hope-Action Inventory in career intervention. Dr. Niles will also review seven keys to intervention success.
Learning Outcomes: As a result of participating in this workshop you will:
1. Learn about Hope-Action Theory and how it can be a useful intervention with clients/students
2. Receive an online code to the Hope-Action Inventory (prior to workshop) in order to take the inventory yourself
3. Process the Hope-Action Inventory and learn the seven Hope-Action competencies
4. Receive access to a video recording of a live session with a career practitioner and client and observe the use of Hope-Action Theory in action
5. Receive handouts and materials on Hope-Action Theory to support you in your work as a career practitioner
6. Learn how to assess your effectiveness with your clients/students

11:00am -12:30pm - Break
12:30-2:30pm - Interactive training and activities on use of Hope-Action competencies as a career intervention for career practitioners

About the Speaker:
Spencer G. Niles is a professor of counselor education and co-director of the Thrive Research and Intervention Center at The College of William & Mary School, where he also served as the former Dean of the School of Education from 2013-2020. He is a past-President of the National Career Development Association (NCDA), where he received the organization's Eminent Career Award.
Previously, he was Distinguished Professor and Department Head at Penn State (where he also developed a CACREP-accredited career counseling program). Before joining the faculty at Penn State, he was a professor at the University of Virginia for 13 years, including serving as assistant dean for the Curry School of Education. Additionally, Niles has directed a career counseling center for adults, worked as a career counselor in higher education, maintained a private practice focusing on career counseling, and served as a career counselor for middle school and high school students.
He has also been a Fulbright Scholar in Finland and taught in over 25 countries. Dr. Niles serves on the editorial boards of six national and international journals and is the past Editor of The Career Development Quarterly and the Journal of Counseling & Development. He has published more than 140 publications and delivered over 150 presentations focusing on career development theory and practice. Among his authored or co-authored books is the best-selling textbook in career counseling and development internationally, Career Development Interventions, published by Pearson, as well as a book on counseling at the global level, Counseling around the world: An international handbook.
